Step 5 - Clarify management’s responsibility

Management has a responsibility and a leading role in preventing and dealing with incidents of sexual harassments.

The manager is responsible for ensuring that employees are not subjected to any form of harassment. This involves responsibility for risk identification and assessment, for implementing measures and for drawing up procedures to prevent harassment in the workplace. This work must be carried out in cooperation with the employees.

The manager is also responsible for dealing with and following up matters/claims if and whenthey arise.

In order to ensure that managers are capable of fulfilling their role in this, knowledge of sexual harassment and other forms of harassment should be included in the health, safety and environment (HSE) training for managers.

When dealing with harassment cases, all managers should be able to call upon the assistance of the occupational health service (“bedriftshelsetjenesten, BHT), other managers or the human resources department.
